05/28/08 - PIDCI: Greater New York Commemorates the 110th ANNIVERSARY OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE
Officers and members of the Board of The Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI) with the cooperation of the Philippine Consulate General of New York, extend their invitation to the greater New York Filipino and Filipino-American community to the Independence Day Parade, Street Fair and Cultural Festival this Sunday, June 1 and the Independence Ball on June 7. This year the Filipino and Filipino-American community of the New York region, comprising mainly of over 90 organizations and associations from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, including Virginia and as far as Hawaii, are all set to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the declaration of Philippine Independence.
INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE

As an incentive and to recognize outstanding efforts of the Filipino community along with the member-organizations of PIDCI who have joined forces to have a memorable and significant Independence celebration focusing on this year’s theme Tribute to Filipino Excellence: Likas na Karunungan, Kakayahan at Kahusayan (Innate Knowledge, Capability and Talent), various recognition awards will be given to parade participants after selection by a panel of judges. Many special guests and celebrities will be participating in the Philippine Independence Day Parade and Cultural Program on Sunday June 1, 2008 on Madison Avenue from 41st to 23rd Streets.
Headlining the guest list are Charice, fresh from her stint at the Oprah Winfrey show, Randy Santiago and Fe Delos Reyes – who will be riding a special Artists Float at the parade and performing at a special celebrity hour at the finale of the cultural show on Madison Avenue corner 23rd Street, is presented and sponsored by TFC/ABS-CBN International. Other Philippine celebrities flying in for the celebration ar Dr. Vicky Belo, a renowned cosmetic surgeon famous in the Philippine showbiz along with another TV personality in his own right, Dr. Hayden Kho. And there’s the Philippine Basketball Association Legends in their first East Coast appearance. Dancing with the Stars Latin ballroom kids Jaryd Farcon and Cara Abaya-Campos will be joined by their siblings who are also ballroom dancers, Craig and Samantha Abaya-Campos.
STREET FAIR
A delectable festival of Filipino food, that draws Filipinos and Filipino-Americans to the annual Philippine Independence Day Street Fair is the distinctive Filipino barbeque, pancit, lumpiang shangai among others, and thirst-quenching halo-halo, sago and gulaman. Filipino food establishments and catering companies will line up the booths of Madison Avenue while service companies and Philippine-made products and other Philippine-inspired wares will be sold by vendors from 24th Street to 26th Street, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Adding the “fun” factor to the day at the Street Fair area, are Free Activities for kids! Face-painting & Magic show by “Maritess”; Balloon Sculptures by Summer the Clown; Caricatures by Samuel Villaflor; including Story-Telling, Kids Arts and Crafts by the Association of Filipino Teachers of America.
CULTURAL SHOW
The Cultural Show presented on an open stage north of 23rd Street on Madison Avenue will open with an original song composed for the 110th Anniversary of Philippine Independence by Archie D’, award-winning composer (Grammy member) entitled “110th” . A front act by (3) pop-rock-soul-groove bands which include members of Filipino-descent playing their original pieces – Paper June, Illustration and a mainstream band, the Receptor. A line up of young local artists to be featured include the talented young boy named “SEVEN”; Fil-Am Rappers - Deep Foundation, ML and B-Dub. R & B singers - Sevilla Brothers (CT) and Eric Garzon. hip-hop dancers from L.I., “Free Style F.L.I.P”. Songwriter, acoustic guitarist Raymund “Rann” Golamco will pay tribute to Pinoy Rock Legends & and classically trained musician, songwriter, ALFA will be doing her original songs. Dance Theater Ensemble of NJ will perform folk dances from the Philippines while “Buddy Houston” will render Country music.
Headliners are two Filipino-Americans who have performed on Broadway, LIZ CASASOLA (MISS SAIGON, DOGEATERS at The Public Theater, and SHOUT! The Mod Musical). She is also a Producer and Managing Director for Diverse City Theater – a theater company that promotes diversity in the arts. ALI EWOLDT, recently made her Broadway debut as Cosette in the revival of Les Miserables, She just performed a show called “Honor” with some wonderful Filipino castmates.
Other local Filipino Pop Artists with a growing patronage in the community include GOLDA, is a mainstay in various concerts and performances in the tri-state area and other parts of the Eastcoast . NOEL GAMBOA ,NYC based artist creates contemporary Pinoy flavored music and dance so that we can show the world our rich and modern colors. JASLEEN JALBAY, a Dramatic Mezzo-Soprano soloist with a background in musical theater from Canada, is looking forward to her debut performance in New York City.
INDEPENDENCE BALL
Climax of the 110th anniversary commemoration of the declaration of Philippine Independence is the Philippine Independence Ball scheduled at the Grand Ballroom of the New York La Guardia Airport Marriott Hotel at 102-05 Ditmars Boulevard, East Elmhurst, New York 11369, on June 7, from 7:pm till 1:00 a.m. A special presentation will feature excerpts from the musical, “LONG SEASON” - A young Filipino idealist leaves everything behind in the old country, including a beloved, to find life anew on American shores. It features rich, romantic and hauntingly poignant music by Filipino composer Fabian Obispo. Book and lyrics by award-winning playwright Chay Yew. With narration by Obie Award Winner Ching Valdes-Aran, some of the featured artists include Filipino American Broadway artists Jose Llana (The Flower Drum Song, 25th Putnam County Spelling Bee) & Julie Danao (Lennon, Rent).; Ms. Diane Phelan, Mr. Francis Jue, Mr. Billy Bustamante, Mr. Mel Maghuyop.
